Essay Writing
Writing measures your ability to compose an essay in standard written English. You are scored only on how well you have expressed yourself in addressing all parts of the question and how well you have organized and presented your ideas. Specific errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling are counted against you when they affect the clarity of your essay.
Strategies to build your writing efficiency:
1. practice writing essays: Set aside regularly scheduled time periods to practice writing Essays. Use the topics that are in this book or topics of your own to develop your writing fluency. Start writing down your ideas as soon as, you have read the practice topic. Use the same strategies as suggested in the following strategies to write an essay.
2. Pay attention to time: Don't worry about the time that takes you to write your first essay. With each successive essay, try to decrease your time. In this way you can build up your writing fluency so that you can write your essay on time.
3. Study the question carefully: Be sure you understand what the question is asking. Consider some of the ways to address the question.
4. Organize your ideas with an outline: Organize the ideas that you have written down into a logical progression by using a simple outline. Check your ideas to see that they answer the essay question, then start writing your essay.
5. Budget your time so that you will be able to complete and correct your essay: Organize your time into the following slots:
a. reading and thinking about the question.
b. organizing your ideas with a simple outline form.
c. writing the essay, and making minor corrections.
6. Use sentence structures and vocabulary you know to be correct: You are more likely to make grammatical error if you write long, complex sentences. In general, use sentences structures and vocabulary over which you have good command.
7.Don't waste time worrying about spelling, punctuation, and grammar: Incorrect spelling, punctuation, and grammar will affect your score if the errors make your essay difficult to understand. You should attempt to write your essay as correctly as possible. but don't waste time worrying about whether or not each sentence is grammatically correct or each word is spelled correctly.
